Why I started this blog (and why you should read it)
Why did I decide to start this blog? Is it because the internet is somehow desperately lacking for blogs right now? Or because I fancy myself an expert whose sage advice desperately needs to be heard around the world by pastors everywhere? Am I someone who just has too much time on his hands and needs something else to keep him busy? No, no, and definitely not!
I’m doing this for three reasons, or rather, for three groups of people:
1. For my congregation
Paul Graham said, “Writing doesn’t just communicate ideas; it generates them.” And Dawson Trotman said, “Thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through the lips and fingertips.” This blog is, among other things, a tool to help me clarify my own thinking on effective pastoral ministry and hopefully generate some new ideas along the way. I’ve found that sharpening my pencil often sharpens my thinking. This makes me a better leader which, in turn, ultimately benefits the congregation that I’m privileged to serve. And as I think out loud on this blog, of course, you’re welcome to listen in! Which brings me to the second group of people I’m writing for…
2. For my fellow pastors
Being a pastor can be immensely rewarding, but let’s be honest– it can also be deeply exhausting and even discouraging at times. This blog is my small attempt to cheer my fellow pastors on and equip them to run the race well. The mission of this website says it all: We exist to encourage and equip pastors to be faithful, fruitful, and fulfilled. My plan is to post regular articles, inspiring quotes, and periodic training videos that cover a wide variety of topics that are relevant to pastors (and other Christian leaders) including preaching, discipleship, leadership, congregational care, church planting, various theological and cultural issues, time management, and caring for one’s own soul as a leader, which brings me to the third person I’m writing for…
3. For myself
It’s not healthy for any pastor to be completely consumed by his work in the church. We all need other healthy outlets, and this blog is one such outlet for me. I enjoy writing, and it is my hope that this blog will help scratch the creative itch inside of me and refresh my own soul which, in the long run, will enable me to be more “faithful, fruitful, and fulfilled” in life and in ministry.
So, I hope you’ll stick around for the conversation, as together we learn how to become more productive pastors for the good of our congregations and for the glory of God!

Hey Brent! You’re off to a roaring start, my friend. I particularly appreciate the servant’s heart and transparency in your offering. Keep up the good work, and I’ll look forward to the next edition!
Thanks, Dr. Grant! Appreciate the encouragement. And to my fellow pastors who may be reading this, let me encourage you to check out Dr. Grant’s website at MyUnderstudy.com. It has some really well-acted and well-produced film shorts of biblical characters that could be useful for sermon introductions, teaching aids, small groups, etc.
